Repair and Restoration

Prerequisite: Completion of Score and Snap workshop, recommended: Pattern Making

The repair and restoration of stained glass windows and lampshades requires a unique combination of both glass skills and problem solving methods.

Students will be introduced to the issues unique to the repair and restoration of stained glass. This is a hands-on learning opportunity in which students will be introduced to all the skills necessary to successfully complete the restoration/repair of a given project. The course includes lecture section and lab sections.

The lecture section is designed to be a soup to nuts overview of the repair/restoration process. We start with assessing the condition of a piece and documentation and then cover highlights of most every repair/restoration situation that you will encounter. Topics include assessing condition, determining value, documentation, copper foil repair, lead came repair, zinc came repair, reinforcement considerations, pattern making, re-purposing, glass matching, glass repair, glass reproduction and traditional glass painting.

The content of the lab section will be dictated by actual studio projects that are in process. Students can bring in a project of their own in addition to the work available. Note that this may inure an additional charge for materials.
